SKVR textEnglish
Virpo-lauvantaki'ksi
1Virpu varpu, vitsat käyvät:Sprigs, twigs, the rods proceed:
2Tulevaks' vuueks', tuoreeks', terveeks'For the coming year: fresh, healthy,
3Kui monta urpaa,As many shoot-tips,
4Niin monta uuttii,So many new [blessings],
5Kui monta oksaa,As many branches,
6Niin monta urttii,So many sprouts,
7Kui monta varpaa,As many forkings,
8Niin monta vasikkaa.So many calves.
9Munanen kanaselta,An egg from the hen,
10Kaakun taikinaiseltaisi,A cake from the dough,
11Voi lusikan lehmältäisi,A spoon of butter from the cow,
12Viina pulli pannultaisi.A jug of liquor from the pan.
13Voin eestä voksuttelen,I sprinkle butter for,
14Minä virvun viinan eestä,I vitalize for the liquor's sake,
15Leivän eestä lepsuttelen,I caress for the bread's sake,
16Rahan eestä raksuttelen,I clink [coins] for money's sake,
17Muksuttelen munan eestä,I kiss-smack for the egg's sake,
18Kaakun eestä kapsuttelen.I nibble for the cake's sake.
19Minä virvun hyvät emännätI vitalize the good mistresses,
20Villasella vitsallain,With a wool-wrapped rod,
21Riiheltä rikkahaksi,From granary to richness,
22Tallilta talonpojaksi,From stable to farmstead,
23Niittoajaks saunavaimoks.As sauna-wife for haymaking.
Sitten viiään vitsat läävään (lakkeen) ja emännät virpoot lehmät ja silloin sanotaan:
24Virpo varpu vitsat käyvät:Sway, twigs, the rods proceed:
25Tulevaks vuueks tuoreeks,For the coming year fresh,
26terveeks', tiineeks'!healthy, pregnant!
Ja vitsat annetaan keväällä paimenpojille ja kolmantena päivänä pannaan vitsain latvat kottiin päin ja sanotaan:
27Vitsat metsään, lehmät kottiin.Rods to woods, cows to barn.
9:nnen säkeen kohdalle reunaan on kirj:
28Hepo tehkö orikka,May the horse become a stallion,
29Lehmä lehmäisen vasikka,The cow a proper calf,
30Emä lammas kolme vuonii,The ewe [to live] three years,
31Karitsainen kaksi vuonii. The lamb two years.
