What this shows
Every poem in the runosong corpus was collected from a specific place (parish or region). This page maps the vocabulary to those 803 collection places, revealing regional vocabulary patterns across Estonian and Finnish traditions.
Place Table
- Click any column header to sort ascending/descending.
- Click a place name to see its distinctive words — the vocabulary most characteristic of that place compared to others.
- Filter by language using the ET/FI toggle buttons.
Word Search
- Switch to Word Search mode and type a wordform to see its geographic distribution.
- Results show a bar chart of how many poems from each place contain that word.
- Click a place bar to see its detail panel.
Distinctive Words
Computed using TF-IDF scoring: words that appear frequently in poems from one place but rarely across all places get a high score. This highlights vocabulary unique to specific regions — local plant names, dialectal forms, place-specific proper nouns, and regional poetic formulas.
Collector Map
- In Map mode, select Collector from the "Show" dropdown and type a collector name (e.g. "Hurt" or "Eisen").
- The map shows their geographic collection pattern — where poems were gathered.
- Note: only the top 10 collection places per collector are shown.
