Tulen jälki.
Tulen jälkeä parannetaan siten, että otetaan ma[a]n sisästä eli järven pohjasta löytettyjä hiiliä ja niillä paistellaan sitä tulen vikaa ja loihetaan että:
Iski tulta ilman ukko,The sky’s old man struck fire,
Välkytteli Väinämöinen,Väinämöinen flashed it,
Päällä kuuven kirjokannen,Upon the moon’s patterned lid,
Päällä taivosen kaheksan.Upon the eightfold heavens.
Kirposi tulikipunaThe fiery red pierced through,
Läpi maan, läpi manuen,Through earth, through the underworld,
Läpi kuuven kirjokannen,Through the moon’s patterned lid,
Läpi taivosen kaheksan,Through the eightfold heavens,
Läpi reppänä retusen,Through a chink’s narrow gap,
Läpi lapsen kätkyestä.Through a child’s cradle.
Pani paarmahat emolta,Placed horseflies on the mother,
Rikko rinnat neitosilta,Shattered maidens’ breasts,
Polvin pyörivi porossa,Knees spinning in the pen,
Käsin hiilihinkalossa,Hands in charcoal embers,
Tuskissansa tuimennaiksen,In agony, growing numb,
Ankehissansa ajaiksen.In anguish, driven to flee.
Jopa kirposi Alue järveen,At last, it pierced Alue Lake,
Siellä uiksenteli, käyksenteli,There it swam, there it thrashed,
Kuihki koivuen tasalle,Rushed to the birches’ height,
Ärskyi päälle äyräittensä;Surged over its own banks;
Joka saari sai sanoman,Every isle heard tidings,
Joka niemi neuvon keksi,Every cape found counsel,
Päivät aalloissa asuvi,Days lived in the waves,
Yöt kokevi kostehissa,Nights endured in wetness,
Pyhät päivät pyörtehissä.Holy days in whirlpools.
Niin tuli silie siika,Then came the sleek whitefish,
Se nieli tulikipunan;It swallowed the fiery red;
Niin tuli halie hauki,Then came the gaunt pike,
Se nieli silien siijan;It swallowed the sleek whitefish;
Niin tuli kulie kuuja,Then came the slender burbot,
Se nieli halien hauvin;It swallowed the gaunt pike;
Niin tuli lohi punanen,Then came the red salmon,
Se nieli kulien kuujan.It swallowed the slender burbot.
Tuli tuska nielijälle,Pain came to the swallower,
Vaikie vajottajalle,Silence to the sinker,
Pakko paljon syönehelle.Torment to the greedy eater.
Siitä poltti paljon maita,Then it burned many lands,
Paljon maita, paljon soita,Many lands, many marshes,
Pahana palokesänä,In an evil blaze-summer,
Tuli vuonna voimatoinna.Fire in a strengthless year.
Jäi paikka palamatointaOne spot remained unburned,
Lumivaaran liepehelle,On Snow Mountain’s edge,
Pohjaispuolelle mäkeä,On the hill’s north side,
Toinen koivun juuren alle.Another under a birch root.
Kannon juuri kaivettihin,The stump’s root was dug,
Koivun juuri kuokittihin,The birch’s root was hoed,
Sieltä löytyi tuonen toukka,There they found Death’s grub,
Tuonen toukka, maan matonen,Death’s grub, earth’s worm,
Ilman ilkeä itikka.The air’s vile insect.
Tuonen toukka poltettihin,Death’s grub was burned,
Maan matonen paistettihinEarth’s worm was roasted,
Venehessä vaskisessa,In a copper boat,
Ruuhessa rautapohjassa.In an iron-bottomed craft.
Sen kypenet kylvettihinIts seeds were scattered,
Porton Pohjolan oville,At wretched Northland’s doors,
Peltohon perättömähän,To a field without order,
Maahan manterettomahan;To a land without foundation;
Tuohon kasvoi kaunis liina,There grew fair flax,
Peiko pellavas yleni.A demon-hemp flourished.
Siitä veljet verkkoa kutovat,Then brothers wove a net,
Sisarukset kehreävät,Sisters spun the cord,
Kälykset käpyilövät.Sisters-in-law gathered cones.
Kutoi verkon kuutta syltä,He wove a net six fathoms,
Sai nuotan satoa syltä.Made a seine a hundred fathoms.
Vetelövi verkkojansaHe dragged his nets along
Tuolla Tuonelan joessa.There in Tuonela’s river.
Puutti nuotan puutoksehen.The net came up lacking.
Sanoi nuori Joukahainen:Young Joukahainen said:
"Mi on nuotan puutoksena,"What’s the net’s deficiency,
Kivessäkö, havossako,In a stone, in a pine,
Vaiko haukien selässä ?"Or on the pikes’ backs?"
Sanoi vanha Väinämöinen,Old Väinämöinen said,
Tietäjä ijän ikuinen:The ageless sage:
"Ei kivessä, ei havossa,"Not in stone, nor in pine,
Ei haukien selässä.Nor on pikes’ backs.
Siellä on lohi punanen,There’s a red salmon,
Vain ei ole väinössä väjessä,But not in Väinö’s stream,
Nykyisessä nuorisossa,In today’s youth,
Poloisessa polvisossa,In the wretched lineage,
Pitäjää tarpomen pitkän."A keeper of long privation."
Otti lakkapiän petäjän,He took a broad-crowned pine,
Kokkohonkan koivikosta,A stout trunk from the birchwood,
Tarpoi nuotan tappuroiksi,Trampled the net to shreds,
Vempo velliksi sevotti,Twisted the mesh to gruel,
Pullot rutjo ruummeniksi,Crushed flasks into corpses,
Kivekset kivimujuiksi.Stones to gravelly mush.
Niin tuli lohi punainen.Then came the red salmon.
Sanoi nuori Joukahainen:Young Joukahainen said:
"Tuttava on tulosen synty,"The fire’s birth is known,
Panun arvo arvattava.The trap’s worth guessed—
Vain ei kärsi käsin ruveta."Yet hands dare not grasp it."
Sanoi vanha Väinämöinen,Old Väinämöinen said,
Tietäjä ijän ikuinen:The ageless sage:
"Tuli on miehen tuttujakin,"Fire is man’s ally,
Vesi vannoteltavia."Water to be sworn tame."
Veti veitsen huotrastansa,He drew a knife from sheath,
Tupestansa tuiman rautan,From scabbard, hard iron,
Halkasi lohi punaisen;Split the red salmon;
Niin tuli kulie kuuja,Then came the slender burbot,
Halkasi kulien kuujan;Split the slender burbot;
Niin tuli halie hauki,Then came the gaunt pike,
Halkasi halien hauvin;Split the gray pike's form;
Niin tuli silie siika,Then came the sleek whitefish,
Halkasi silien siijan;Split the whitefish's body;
Niin tuli tulisoronen.Then came the fire-fragment.
Purkelovi, lappelovi,Bursting, flapping,
Niin kirposi tulikipunaThen the fire-glow slipped free
Suolan, suuruksen seasta.From the salt, from the vastness's midst.
Ja sitten ne hiilet viijään märkään paikkaan, ettei niitä saa tuli käsiisä milloinkaan, niin paranee tulen vijat.
