SKVR textEnglish
Läksin miä soille sotkemaa,I went to the swamps to stir,
Ahoille miä ajelemmaa,To the clearings I roamed,
Tuol oli metsät vettä täynnä,There the woods were full of water,
Puun juuret punaista olutta,Tree roots held red ale,
Ahot täynnä astioia,Clearings brimmed with vessels,
Kannon juuret kannulois.Stump roots held jugs.
Otin miä kannun, otin toissen,I took one jug, then another,
Kohta kolmatta rupesin,Soon I started a third,
Join miä itseen juovuksii,I drank myself to drunkenness,
Join miä itse, juotin miä muita.Drank myself, made others drink.
Rupesi nukuttammaa,Sleepiness overcame me,
Nukuin miä nurmelle hyvälle,I slept on soft turf,
Vaivuin maalle valkialle,Sank onto pale earth,
Alle kuusen kukkalatvan,Beneath a spruce’s flowery crown,
Alle haapaisen vennoisen;Under a young aspen’s shade;
Vei varas hyvän hepoisen,A thief took my good horse,
Hiiren karvaisen kaottiMy mouse-gray gelding,
Sekä saarnisen satulan. And my willow-wood saddle.
Miäpä itkien kottiin,I wept my way home,
Kallotellen kartanolle,Staggered to the farmstead,
Isoi aitassa assuu,Father sat in the granary,
Emoi aitan rappusilla.Mother on granary steps.
Isoi ennättää kyssyy:Father asked at once:
"Mitä itket, poikaiseen?""Why weep, little son?"
Miä vasse vastaelin:I answered swiftly:
"Sitä itken miä, issoin,"I weep, father, because
Vei varas hyvän hepoisen,A thief took my good horse,
Hiirenkarvaisen kaottiMy mouse-haired gelding,
Sekä saarnisen satulan!"And my willow saddle!"
Isoi kielsi itkömästä:Father chided my crying:
"Elä huoli, poikueen,"Don’t fret, my boy,
Eglen meillä lehmä poiki,Yesterday our cow calved,
Teki tuo valkoisen vasikan,Bore a white calf,
Sukkajalan suilahutti;White-socked, splashing;
Tuo vietiin Viipuriin,It was sent to Vyborg,
Tuolla me saahaa satoi,There we’ll gain hundreds,
Tuhansii tungetaa,Thousands we’ll stash,
Ossetaa oroi parempi,Fetch a better stallion,
Taikka tamma sälköväine,Or a blaze-faced mare,
Tuo syöpi kaurat räystähiltä,It’ll eat oats from rooftops,
Pilvestä veen vettää."Drink water from clouds."
