SKVR textEnglish
Itkun pieksin petkeleellä,I beat my weeping with a wooden tool,
surun survoin huumarella,I crushed my sorrow in the marsh,
hakkasin halon keralla,I split a log with a wedge,
vatkasin vasaran kanssa,I toiled with a hammer,
surun pieksin pehmiäksi,I pounded grief soft,
löin itku(i)ni ijäiset.I struck my eternal weepings.
En uo itkenyt issoo,I did not weep for father,
en itkenyt emmoo, nor weep for mother,
vaikka petti pienosenna, though abandoned as a child,
jätti kuin jänö pojjaasenleft like a hare's young,
suolle soikkeroittamaane,to wander the swamp,
palolle papattamaane.to stumble on the heath.
Piennä petti miu issoini,As a child, my father abandoned me,
vakahanna vanhempaini,my steadfast parents,
sano kuuksi kuolevaasen, called me a moon to die,
kaheksi kattoovaasen.as two to be sheltered.
Ei ollut pololla miulla,I had no path,
ei olt turvaa tuvassa,no safety in the house,
armoo ei katoksen alla;no mercy beneath the roof;
sen kun kynnin kyykyttelin,so I plowed, bent double,
itse kynnin, itse kylvin, myself plowed, myself sowed,
itse siemenen sirotin, myself scattered the seed,
selässäin oli siemen säkki,on my back was the seed sack,
olallain oli atrain aisat,on my shoulders, the harrow's shafts.
itse kynnin kyysen pellon,I plowed the tearful field,
itse vaivanen vakosin.myself bore the toil.
Mie itse orosen ostin,I myself bought a horse,
orosell siit otran kynnin, with the horse plowed barley,
kynnin kymmenen vakkoaa,plowed ten measures,
tuoss sain mie sata kekkoo, there I gained a hundred sheaves,
lyhe kussain kieossa, short ones in some stacks,
olen kors' oli lyhtehessä,the straw was in the short one,
otra oli joka olessa, barley was in every stalk,
tähkä oli täynnä jyyvvii.ears full of grains.
Tul' miu oiva otra vuosi,My fine barley grew,
ruis vuosi tuli aivo runsas, rye grew most abundant,
ei vaa kaurat kasvann(i)eet.only the oats did not grow.
