The archive’s description
Written by the editors of the SKVR type index and quoted as it stands, in Finnish.
Tuonelassa käynti ilmentää samaa ideaa kuin Vipusen virsi: molemmissa mennään hakemaan tuonpuoleisesta (Tuonelta, kauan sitten kuolleelta tietäjältä Vipuselta) sanoja veneenveistoon. Tuonelassa käynnin keskeinen osa on dialogi Tuonelan väen kanssa ("mi sium Manalle suatto?"), Vipusen virressä pajan valmistus, rautaseiväs, joka syöstään Vipusen suuhun ja saadaan sanat. Huom. motiivi, jossa kuvataan matkaa Vipusen luo pitkin "naisten neulojen neniä" vrt. Kilpakosinta. Pohjanmaalla Vipus-aihe liittyy myös tautiloitsuihin: tauti (riisi) manataan "suuhun Antero Vipusen". Etelässä aihe muuntunut siten, että "virsikäs Vipusen poika" tekee tiedolla venettä.
