The archive’s description

Written by the editors of the SKVR type index and quoted as it stands, in Finnish.

Runo alkaa erilaisin johdantojaksoin. Pohjoisilla alueilla johdantona on Kullervon sotaanlähtö, Eteläisillä alueilla johdannot ovat vaihtelevia, kuten Anteruksen tai pääskysen sotaan lähtö (IV, V, XIII, ks. Pääskynen sotaan läksi), Kouluun kotoa, Lintunen lehossa lauloi (V 374), Sinon kylväjä (IV, V), Menin viinaa Virosta (V) tai Läksin neito nuori (III). Inkerissä runo on ollut myös leikkilaulu siihen kuuluvin johdannoin (ks. tanssilaulut: >Sure, sure, hyvä rouva). Ydinaihe: Päähenkilö (Kullervo, Anterus, minä ym.) kuulee kotoa poissa ollessaan viestejä omaistensa kuolemasta ja reagoi niihin eri tavoin; usein ytimenä on perheenjäsenten (isä, äiti, sisar, veli) ja puolison vastakkainasettelu. Runo yhdistyy joskus muihin omaisen kuolemaa käsitteleviin runoihin (Äidin kuolo, Itketkö sinä minua jne.)
