This page explores the 7,368 people and institutions who collected 292,092 Finnic runosong poems. Notable collectors include Elias Lönnrot (compiler of the Kalevala), Jakob Hurt (organizer of the great Estonian folklore collection campaign of 1888), and many local enthusiasts. Five views are available: a sortable table, a statistics overview, an animated timeline map, full collector journey profiles, and a geographic coverage map.

Table Tab
Sort by clicking any column header (Name, Poems, Verses, Lang, Corpus, Period, Places).
Filter by typing in the search box or selecting a language.
Compare two collectors by clicking the Compare button, then selecting two rows.
CSV Export downloads the currently filtered table as a CSV file.
Click any row to expand detailed information including timeline, corpus breakdown, places, and distinctive vocabulary.
Overview Tab
Totals for the whole collector index: how many collectors, how many poems they wrote down, and how those split between major collectors (50+ poems) and the rest.
Collection records are counted once per collector, so a poem written down by two people appears in the Estonian and Finnish figures twice.
Spotlight cards highlight the most prolific collector, the widest-ranging one, and a random collector. Click a card to open that collector in the table.
Collection by Era counts poems by the year they were written down; Top Collectors by Poems shows the ten largest, colored by corpus.
Timeline Tab
Play/Pause animates through decades. Step buttons move one decade at a time.
Cumulative mode shows all poems collected up to the current decade. Snapshot mode shows only the current decade.
Blue dots = Finnish places (SKVR + JR). Orange dots = Estonian places (ERAB).
Circle size indicates poem count. Click any dot for place details.
Click the sparkline bars to jump to a specific decade.
Journey Tab
Search by typing a collector name. Autocomplete suggestions appear after 2 characters.
Random picks a collector with 50+ poems for interesting results.
Profile sections: collection places map, decade chart, distinctive vocabulary (TF-IDF weighted), places visited, sample poem titles, and similar collectors.
Browse All shows an alphabetical directory of all collectors.
Coverage Tab
Map shows all 803 collection places on a Leaflet map with parish borders. Circle size = collector count, color changes by mode.
Color modes: "By collector count" (yellow→red), "By poem count", or "By earliest decade" (era colors).
Hover any circle to see place name, collectors, poems, and corpus total. Click to scroll to the table row.
Table shows all 803 places. Click any column header to sort ascending/descending.
Filter by name (search box), language (ET/FI), or type (Parish/County).
Click a row to expand the full collector list and pan the map. Use the compass button to zoom to a place.
Sort by Collectors ascending to find places with no attributed collector.
