What is this page?

The Regional Heritage Profile aggregates multiple data sources into a single view for each collection place. For every place in the corpus you can see runosong statistics (poem, word, and verse counts), the emotional landscape derived from emotion-word analysis, treasure legends recorded at that location, and nearby places with their own heritage data.

Finding a place

Use the dropdown to search by name. Places are sorted by poem count so the richest collection sites appear first. Each entry shows the place name, total poems, and language (ET for Estonian, ERAB; FI for Finnish, SKVR and JR; KR poems carry no collection place). You can also click "Random place" to explore somewhere unexpected.

The map

The interactive map centers on the selected place (large brown dot) and shows nearby collection sites as smaller dots within a 100 km radius. Click any nearby dot to jump directly to that place's profile.

Statistics

Stat cards show: total poems collected, the number of distinct words, total verses, the average number of words per verse (a rough measure of line length), and the number of treasure legends on record.

Statistical outliers

Alert boxes highlight statistically unusual patterns for about 20 of 803 places, such as an emotion domain appearing far more than average, or an unusually high concentration of treasure legends (computed via z-score).

Distinctive vocabulary

Top 15 words most distinctive to this place, ranked by TF-IDF score. Each word links to its concordance view filtered to this place.

Collection timeline

Horizontal bars show how many poems were collected here in each decade from 1800 to 1970, with the peak decade highlighted.

Poetic features

Alliteration rate and parallelism score compared to the corpus average (green above, red below). For Finnish places in the top 200, a metre breakdown is also shown. ERAB and SKVR/KR/JR metrics come from different methods and may not be directly comparable.

If the place has entries in the treasure legends corpus (Estonian varandusemuistendid), they appear as expandable cards. Only Estonian places have legend data.

Places within 80 km are listed as clickable buttons with their distance. Clicking one loads that place's profile.

Place comparison

Click the Compare button or press C to enter comparison mode. Select a second place to see a side-by-side layout showing stat grids with delta badges, emotion bars for both places with a bilateral delta row, distinctive vocabulary with shared-word highlighting, and top word frequencies. The map shows both places with a dashed distance line.

Most frequent words

Below the TF-IDF distinctive vocabulary, the "Most Frequent Words" panel shows the top 20 wordforms by raw frequency. Dual bars compare local vs. corpus-wide frequency. Press W to toggle between content words (excluding stop words) and all words.

Kinship arcs

Curved arcs on the map connect the selected place to its top 5 cross-corpus partner places (those it shares the most cross-corpus song connections with). Arc width is proportional to connection count. Click a partner dot to navigate to that place.

Data coverage note

Not all sections have data for every place. Larger, well-studied collection sites have richer profiles; smaller or less-studied places may show fewer populated sections — this reflects the historical unevenness of folklore collection, not missing functionality.

Deep linking

The URL updates automatically when you select a place (e.g. ?place=Kuusalu). In comparison mode, both places appear in the URL (e.g. ?place=Kuusalu&compare=Setumaa). You can copy and share these links.
