Cross-Corpus Song Type Bridge

What this shows

Each row is an Estonian (ET) ↔ Finnish (FI) song type pair connected by shared verse material. If the same (or closely similar) verse cluster appears in both traditions' recordings of these two song types, that counts as a bridge.

Tabs

• List — Browse all pairs with filtering, sorting, and export.
• Network — Interactive force-directed bipartite graph showing ET and FI types as nodes. A line joins two types that share verses; the more verses they share, the thicker the line.
• Geography — Map of song-type to song-type bridges: each Estonian type and its Finnish partner are placed at the geographic centre of where they were collected, joined by a line. Filter two independent kinds of evidence — shared verses and whole-poem resemblance — each as Any, Require, or Exclude, and combine them freely (for example: whole-poem resemblance but no shared verses).
• Themes — Aggregate statistics by thematic category, showing cross-corpus density per theme. The theme comes from the archives’ filing of the type or its songs where there is one, otherwise from words in the type’s name.

How to read a row (List tab)

• Shared verses (center) — how many verses link the two types. Here a verse is one line in one poem, so a line sung in twenty poems counts twenty times. For each type, the verses of its own poems are counted that sit in a verse cluster together with a verse from the other type’s poems; the smaller of the two counts is shown, so a pair that rests on a single verse on either side shows 1. A verse counts once, however many clusters it sits in. The list is ordered by this number.
• Shared clusters (expanded detail) — how many verse clusters hold verses from both types’ poems. Clusters overlap, and one verse can sit in many of them, so this number can be far larger than the shared verses.
• English translations — shown in gray italics beneath each song type name. A type name without an English translation shows none.
• Weighted score (expanded detail) — the shared clusters again, each counted as 1 divided by the number of Estonian types times the number of Finnish types found in that cluster, so a cluster that many song types share counts for less.
• same-name pair badge — the ET and FI type names are cognates.
• Type Passport — expanded view shows cross-corpus rank and top partners.

Type-Bridge Map (Geography tab)

Shows where each bridged song type sits. Every type is placed at the collection-weighted centre of its recording places, computed per language so an Estonian type lands in Estonia and its Finnish partner in Finland. Circles are orange for Estonian types, blue for Finnish. Lines are coloured by the evidence each bridge carries: teal bridges share verse material — their poems carry the same verses (often shared incantations, but the strongest are real cross-corpus songs); and amber dashed whole-poem resemblance bridges connect types whose whole poems look alike across the border (the weakest evidence type — set the Whole-poem filter above the map to Require to focus on these). The whole-poem layer offers two sources you can switch between: the whole-poem, order-aware measure and the shared verse material, multi-leg measure — they can disagree, which is exactly why both are offered. Treat it as the weakest evidence type here: under the order-aware source a cross-corpus link leans almost entirely on one translation-based comparison, so be cautious with low-count links; under the multi-leg source the link is backed by several independent legs but is order-free, so a high count can reflect a few shared recurring lines rather than whole-poem similarity. Throughout the map, a type's dot marks where its tradition was collected, not a single place of origin. Each kind of evidence has its own filter above the map: set it to Any, Require (with a minimum on the slider beside it), or Exclude, and combine the two freely; click a type for its own bridges, or click a line for its details.
