Pick an English concept (e.g., mother, sing, death) and see its Finnic dialectal variants spread across 803 runosong collection places. Circle colour shows the dominant wordform at each place; size shows total attestations.
What this shows
For each English meaning present in the DeepSeek translation index (471,241 concepts), the map plots every collection place where one or more Finnic wordforms carrying that meaning were recorded. Circle size encodes the total number of attestations at that place; colour encodes the variant that is most common there.
How to read the map
Dominant Variant (default) — a place is coloured by the single most-used wordform for that concept.
Variant Focus — after clicking the circle icon next to a variant in the sidebar, the map recolours by the share of that one variant alone. Best for tracking regional footprints of minority forms.
Frequency Heat — single-hue gradient by total frequency, regardless of which variant is used. Best for seeing where a concept is discussed most.
Use the eye icon next to a variant to hide it from dominant-variant colouring (so the next-highest form wins).
Data caveats
Coordinates mark where songs were collected, not necessarily where variants were natively spoken.
Only the ~30,000 most frequent Finnic wordforms have place indices; very rare concepts are excluded from the search.
Places with fewer than 2 total hits for the selected concept are hidden for legibility.
