Teräase tai työkalu (kirves, viikate, neula jne.) lumotaan ihmistä haavoittamattomaksi lyhyillä loitsuilla, joissa rautaa kehoitetaan pehmenemään tai puremaan puuta, ja ihmisen ihoa kovenemaan. Rautaa on lumottu useissa eri konteksteissa, joiden loitsut on koottu tähän (ks. kuitenkin myös vertailuotsikot). Usein kyseessä on ollut tietäjän voimannäyttö, tavallisesti viikatteen päällä käveleminen. Joissain tapauksissa myös Raudan sanoihin sijoitetut raudan vihojen estämiseen tarkoitetut loitsut muistuttavat Raudan lumouksia - tällöin on kuitenkin kyseessä jo tapahtuneen vamman immunisoiminen raudan vihoilta, ei vamman estäminen.
