Ähkyn loitsujen tyypillisiä aineksia ovat ähkyn puhuttelut, lyhyet syntyaihelmat sekä erilaiset tietäjän kerskaukset (esim. Kokolta koprat) ja karkotussanat. Läntisillä alueilla (VIII, IX, X, XIV) ähkyn loitsu on itäisiä ja pohjoisia lyhyempi, puhutteluista, lyhyistä karkotussanoista koostuva tai numeraali- tai dialogikaavalle rakentuva. Samaa loitsua on voitu käyttää sekä ihmisen että eläimen ähkyyn.
