Leppäkertulta tiedustellaan monia asioita: säätä, sotaa, puolisoa, kirkkoon pääsyä. Leppäkerttua pyydetään tuomaan kauniita vaatteita, mutta etenkin sitä houkutellaan lentämään johonkin, yleensä kiven juureen, missä sen äiti ja isä keittävät puuroa. Jos se ei noudata pyytäjän toiveita, uhataan, että se laitetaan kiven alla kituman, padan alle paistumaan. Joskus leppäkertun lennosta ennustetaan: ylöspäin lento tietää kysyjään kuolemaa tai taivaaseen pääsyä, alaspäin lento joutumista helvettiin.
