The archive’s description

Written by the editors of the SKVR type index and quoted as it stands, in Finnish.

Tuonelaan tuudittamisen kehtolaulut ovat olleet yleisiä kaikkialla Suomessa. Ne alkavat yleisimmin säkeellä Tuuti/Tuudin lasta Tuonela(h)an, harvemmin Tuuti/Tuudin lasta turpe(h)ese(e)n, joskus (I) Tuuti Tuonelle tytärtä. Vaihtelevia jatkosäkeitä: Heijaan hiekkamättähäsen, laulan lautojen välihin; Turvetta tukkeemaan, mätästä märättämään; Tuonen piikojen pidellä, Tuonen lasten laulatella; Tuonne kirkon kammioon, tuoll on tupa turvekatto, hieno hiekkapellon paikka; Tuonelass on tupa uus. Korostetaan paikan rauhaa ja toistellaan, miten hyvä lapsen on siellä olla: sinne ei kuulu linnun laulu, sinne eivät tuule tuulet eivät sada sateet, siellä voi nukkua käsivarren kääntymättä, olkapään ojentamatta.

Tupa-ajatus kasvaa konkreettisen haudan kuvasta myyttisen Ihmetuvan ylistyksiksi erityisesti lännessä (VIII, IX, X, XII, XIV), jonkin verran Savo-Karjalassakin (VI, VII, XII, XIII), mutta ortodoksisesta Karjalasta se puuttuu. Esimerkki Varsinais-Suomesta: Ovi siel on omenapuust, käresiä kärpä luust ja akkuna mustist pilvist, seinät siirottu kullalla, penkki hopeapenninkeistä, permanto hopeamarkoist (VIII 2113).
